7 Easy Steps to Weight Loss

Getting started on your easy steps
Anyone who has ever tried dieting knows the immediate feeling of deprivation that accompanies most weight loss plans. The result for most of us is that we can't stick to it.
Instead of drastically cutting your diet, try gradually accustoming yourself to eating less. Take smaller portions. Leave a little on the plate. In time, you'll find you need less food to feel satiated.
As you practice putting less on your plate, consider these seven steps to eating less (the following list is taken from Mr. Paul Wolf, health correspondent, and we highly recommend it):

Mini-meal is the operative word
Ideally, every time you eat, your plate should have some protein, a little fat and a little fibrous bulk to ensure that you feel full and satisfied. This takes some planning. It ultimately means losing the "mindlessly munching on pretzels" habit.
"Even if you eat fruit as a snack, healthy as it is, you won't feel completely satisfied because it doesn't have any protein and fat," Booth says.
An apple followed by, say, some plain yogurt, will do more for satiety than two apples. A baked potato, which has 100 calories, contributes more to satisfaction than 20 potato chips, which, at 114 calories, adds up quickly. Top that spud with a quarter-cup of low-fat cottage cheese (100 calories), and you have a filling, healthy snack for 200 calories.

Don't deprive yourself
You don't want to feel deprived or hungry; drastically cutting calories will only slow down your metabolism by driving your system into famine mode.
Don't count calories; just eyeball your portions. Let's say you hope to reduce your daily caloric intake from about 2,500 to 2,000. Focus on reducing your portion sizes by about 20 percent.
Within a matter of a couple of weeks, you will be adjusted to the new serving sizes and they will seem normal.

Eat delicious and well
Every diet regimen should permit the occasional treat and nice meal out. Eat delicious food, but eat it in smaller portions.
Obviously, cream sauces and fudge brownies at every meal will thwart your weight loss goals. Learn to enjoy ordinary food as well as extraordinary delicacies.

Eat your calories, don't drink them
A can of Dr. Pepper soda contains 150 calories. Three of these a day is an extra 450 calories. If you add commercial beverages, juices and sugary lattes to your diet, you practically need a calculator to tally the calories that don't do a thing when it comes to fulfilling your appetite.
Stick to water and tea and get your calories from more filling and satisfying foods.

Exercise is the perfect partner
Your diet will be all the more successful if you combine it with regular exercise.
Approach your exercise and diet plan with a focus on how you look and feel, not how much you weigh. In other words, think in inches lost, not pounds. Remember that muscle weighs more than fat.

Make meals last
Yes, two Balance protein bars have only 360 calories and also contain vitamins, minerals, fiber, protein, fat, and carbohydrates. But you can down these suckers in a matter of seconds. Where's the chewing satisfaction? A couple of nutrition bars are not a meal or even a mini-meal for that matter.
The satiety centers of the brain may not get the message right away that you've had enough. Eat slowly, chew carefully and don't put more food in your mouth when you haven't dealt completely with the last bite

7 Instant Energy Boosters

1. Get a Whiff of Citrus
The smells of oranges, lemons, and grapefruits have been shown to be energizing, so simply add a slice or two of your favorite to a glass of water.
Or introduce citrusy scents into your morning routine, since several major beauty brands—Suave, Dove, and Dial, to name a few—now offer citrus-infused, wake-up-the-body washes. For a quick midday refresher, moisten a cotton ball with a few drops of citrusy bergamot oil and inhale.

2. Pull Your Hair
No, really. “If you gently take handfuls of hair and pull the skin away from your scalp to get blood flowing to that area of the head, you can relieve a lot of potentially tiring tension,” says Marlene Merritt, a doctor of Oriental medicine and a nutritionist at the Merritt Wellness Center, in Austin, Texas.

3. Exhale
Flushing out toxins helps the body run more efficiently, which also means you’ll have more energy. Simply lie in bed for two extra minutes in the morning and focus on taking deep breaths, since “many of our toxins are expelled by breathing,” says Karas.

4. Be Nice to a Stranger
“Sure, the sentiment feels a little bumper stickery, but when you do something kind, your energy goes up,” says nutritionist Jonny Bowden, author of The 150 Most Effective Ways to Boost Your Energy. Starbucks customers at drive-throughs around the country have been paying for the next customer behind them in a grassroots acts-of-kindness movement.Find other ideas at actsofkindness.org.

5. Pop a Peppermint
Smelling peppermint “stimulates the trigeminal nerve, which stimulates the area of the brain responsible for arousal and can make you more alert,” says Hirsch. (So that’s how Santa stays up all night).

6. Do Interval Exercise in the Morning
“Researchers at Leeds Metropolitan University, in England, found that exercising before or during lunchtime leads to a more productive workday,” says Karas.
But don’t spend 45 long minutes on the treadmill at one consistent pace. Bowden notes that alternating bursts of rapid activity, like running, with slower activity, like walking, over the course of about a half hour is a more energizing way to work out than endurance-focused exercise. Finally, in addition to your regular workout, one-minute sets of jumping jacks throughout the day will get your blood flowing.

7. Show Your Hands Some Love
“Take a golf ball and roll it between your desktop and your hand, from the base of the thumb, where your hand webs out, down to the wrist,” says Kevin Kunz, a coauthor of Complete Reflexology for Life. “There’s a really sensitive spot there. Stimulating it will perk you up,” says Kunz.

Ivanka Trump criticizes Obama, dons bunny suit in new issue of Harper's Bazaar

Fashion designer and real estate heiress Ivanka Trump has taken up her father Donald Trump’s torch, opening up about the 2012 presidential race and Barack Obama’s political performance.

In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Trump, who posed for the magazine in a bunny suit, says her father would have been just what the country needed, despite his recent announcement that he would not be running.

“I think he's exactly what we need. He's the best equipped to deal with the most important issues this nation has, which is ultimately that we're suffering under a massive burden of debt. We need a very acute financial mind to get us out of this mire.”

"America is the largest corporation on the planet. You wouldn't hire a novice to run a similarly sized company in the private markets," she says.

Trump says that while she wants Obama to succeed now that he is in office, she did not vote for him.

Of course [once he was elected] I wanted him to succeed, but he's proven to be a very ineffective leader. He has just not risen to the occasion. He doesn't have business experience or a business mind."

For now, what’s on Trump’s mind is the impending birth of her daughter with husband Jared Kushner.

"We both said we wanted to wait one year and just enjoy being newlyweds. So we waited pretty much exactly that," Trump says. "Jared is ecstatic," she says. "She'll be a daddy's girl. I have a feeling they are going to gang up on me."
"We have our work cut out for us to ensure that our daughter is grounded and not spoiled."

Color blazers anyone?

Color Block trends

Camilla and Zoe

On the Runway

Color blocking involves combining two or more different colors in one outfit. It could be a dress with two hues, or a plain-colored top and bottom with complementing, muted or contrasting colors. Shoes, bags, swimwear and nail art can also feature these blocks of color in one design. The important part is that the colors are solid, meaning they are not broken up by patterns or prints.

Color blocking is an awesome trend to play with if you’re hoping to add more color to your ensembles. It’s also a great way to transform those single-color pieces into a fashion-forward statement. The way I see it, wearing the color block trend can be done in three ways – the easy way, the hard way and the really easy way. The easy way is to get a dress that’s already color blocked so you don’t have to worry about what colors go with what.

Donald Trump announces he is not running for president

Raise your hand if you never believed Donald Trump would run for president?

After several months of creating havoc with the electoral system and giving President Obama a reason to start smoking again, Trump has withdrawn his threat to run for president in 2012.

Trump announced that he wouldn't throw his hat in the ring for the highest job in the land, but he is looking forward to the more profitable venture of another season of "The Celebrity Apprentice."

He did say that if he had decided to run, he's confident that he would have won the primaries and then the general election.

Here's what he said,

After considerable deliberation and reflection, I have decided not to pursue the office of the Presidency. This decision does not come easily or without regret; especially when my potential candidacy continues to be validated by ranking at the top of the Republican contenders in polls across the country. I maintain the strong conviction that if I were to run, I would be able to win the primary and ultimately, the general election. I have spent the past several months unofficially campaigning and recognize that running for public office cannot be done half heartedly. Ultimately, however, business is my greatest passion and I am not ready to leave the private sector.

I want to personally thank the millions of Americans who have joined the various Trump grassroots movements and written me letters and e-mails encouraging me to run. My gratitude for your faith and trust in me could never be expressed properly in words. So, I make you this promise: that I will continue to voice my opinions loudly and help to shape our politician's thoughts. My ability to bring important economic and foreign policy issues to the forefront of the national dialogue is perhaps my greatest asset and one of the most valuable services I can provide to this country. I will continue to push our President and the country's policy makers to address the dire challenges arising from our unsustainable debt structure and increasing lack of global competitiveness. Issues, including getting tough on China and other countries that are methodically and systematically taking advantage of the United States, were seldom mentioned before I brought them to the forefront of the country's conversation. They are now being debated vigorously. I will also continue to push for job creation, an initiative that should be this country's top priority and something that I know a lot about. I will not shy away from expressing the opinions that so many of you share yet don't have a medium through which to articulate.

I look forward to supporting the candidate who is the most qualified to help us tackle our country's most important issues and am hopeful that, when this person emerges, he or she will have the courage to take on the challenges of the Office and be the agent of change that this country so desperately needs

Thank you and God Bless America!

The announcement follows statements from NBC's entertainment chairman, Robert Greenblatt, on Sunday declaring that if the real estate mogul and reality host decides to run for president, the show would go on without him. We're sure that's not at all connected to his decision...

Arnold Schwarzenegger Shocker: He Had Baby With Staffer

Just days after announcing their shocking split after 25 years of marriage, new details have emerged about the separation of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver leading the action film star and former governor to acknowledge he had a child with a former member of his house staff.

The LA Times broke the story overnight, reporting that a decade ago Schwarzenegger and a household employee who had worked for his family for 20 years had a baby together. Schwarzenegger confirmed the reporting, issuing a statement saying:

“After leaving the governor’s office I told my wife about this event, which occurred over a decade ago. I understand and deserve the feelings of anger and disappointment among my friends and family. There are no excuses and I take full responsibility for the hurt I have caused. I have apologized to Maria, my children and my family. I am truly sorry.”

Following the story breaking, Shriver issued a statement, saying: “This is a painful and heartbreaking time. As a mother, my concern is for the children. I ask for compassion, respect and privacy as my children and I try to rebuild our lives and heal. I will have no further comment.”

Shriver and Schwarzenegger announced their split on May 9. In a joint statement issued to the Times, the couple said:

“This has been a time of great personal and professional transition for each of us,” the statement read. “After a great deal of thought, reflection, discussion and prayer, we came to this decision together. At this time, we are living apart while we work on the future of our relationship. We are continuing to parent our four children together. They are the light and the center of both of our lives. We consider this a private matter and neither we nor any of our friends or family will have further comment. We ask for compassion and respect from the media and the public.”

The couple were married in 1986, and have four children.

Military defuses bomb in Ireland ahead of Queen's historic visit

Irish military defused a bomb Tuesday on a bus headed to Dublin, ahead of a historic visit by Britain's Queen Elizabeth II to the city.

The military stopped a private bus in Maynooth, evacuated the passengers and found a "viable device" in the luggage compartment of the bus early Tuesday morning, a spokesman for the Irish national police said.

Later Tuesday morning, Irish authorities raced to the scene of a second suspicious device -- but it was later determined to be a hoax. Authorities responded to at least one report of a suspicious package in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

The British foreign office said the Queen's visit will go ahead as planned.

It is a visit that many in Ireland believed would never happen, and will mark the reconciliation between two neighboring countries that once viewed each with suspicion and hostility. .

Ireland's fight to free itself from its former imperial master is likely to form much of the narrative of the visit, the first by a UK monarch to the republic since it gained independence in 1921.

IMF chief jailed on Rikers Island, charged with attempted rape

The head of the powerful International Monetary Fund will spend the next few days in an 11-by-13-foot cell at New York's Rikers Island jail complex -- a far cry from the $3,000-a-night luxury suite where he allegedly chased a housekeeping employee naked down a hallway and attempted to sexually assault her.

A haggard-looking Dominique Strauss-Kahn was denied bail in a New York courtroom on Monday. By the end of the day, the 62-year-old was "settled" in at the East River compound, said a New York Department of Corrections spokesman who declined to be named.

Strauss-Kahn's next court appearance is scheduled for Friday. Until then, he will have no contact with other inmates because he is considered a high-profile detainee, the spokesman said.

His new neighbors will include 14,000 men and women who have been accused or convicted of a host of crimes committed in New York City.

Just a few days earlier, Strauss-Kahn was staying in a posh suite at the Sofitel hotel replete with its own foyer, conference room, hallway and living room. Police said the IMF chief was naked when he allegedly tried to lock the 32-year-old hotel employee in the suite and force himself on her Saturday.

The next day, Strauss-Kahn was supposed to be in Europe talking with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and preparing to be a leading figure in sessions addressing economic crises in Greece, Portugal, Ireland and beyond. Instead, he found himself in "The Tombs," a Lower Manhattan jail that proved to be a way station before his departure to Rikers Island.

His arrest rattled the financial world, given his leadership directing multi-billion-dollar loans and financial policy that regularly affect tens of millions of people.

But its impact was most felt in France, where Strauss-Kahn had been not only a leading contender to be the Socialist party's presidential nominee but a favorite to unseat incumbent President Nikolas Sarkozy.

8 FOODS THAT BOOST IMMUNITY

1. Vitamin C
Vitamin C tops the list of immune boosters for many reasons. There has been more research about the immune-boosting effects of Vitamin C than perhaps any other nutrient.Vitamin C increases the production of infection-fighting white blood cells and antibodies and increases levels of interferon, the antibody that coats cell surfaces, preventing the entry of viruses.

2. Vitamin E
Vitamin E stimulates the production of natural killer cells, those that seek out and destroy germs and cancer cells. Vitamin E enhances the production of B-cells, the immune cells that produce antibodies that destroy bacteria.

3. Carotenoids
Beta carotene increases the number of infection-fighting cells, natural killer cells, and helper T-cells, as well as being a powerful antioxidant that mops up excess free radicals that accelerate aging. Like the other "big three" antioxidants, vitamins C and E, it reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease by interfering with how the fats and cholesterol in the bloodstream oxidize to form arterial plaques.

4. Bioflavenoids
A group of phytonutrients called bioflavenoids aids the immune system by protecting the cells of the body against environmental pollutants.

5. Zinc
This valuable mineral increases the production of white blood cells that fight infection and helps them fight more aggressively. It also increases killer cells that fight against cancer and helps white cells release more antibodies. Zinc supplements have been shown to slow the growth of cancer.

6. Garlic
This flavorful member of the onion family is a powerful immune booster that stimulates the multiplication of infection-fighting white cells, boosts natural killer cell activity, and increases the efficiency of antibody production.

7. Selenium
This mineral increases natural killer cells and mobilizes cancer-fighting cells. Best food sources of selenium are tuna, red snapper, lobster, shrimp, whole grains, vegetables (depending on the selenium content of the soil they're grown in), brown rice, egg yolks, cottage cheese, chicken (white meat), sunflower seeds, garlic, Brazil nuts, and lamb chops

8. Omega-3 fatty acids
The omega 3 fatty acids in flax oil and fatty fish (such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel) act as immune boosters by increasing the activity of phagocytes, the white blood cells that eat up bacteria.

What causes the noise when you crack a joint?

Your joints can make a variety of sounds: popping, cracking, grinding, and snapping. The joints that "crack" are the knuckles, knees, ankles, back, and neck. There are different reasons why these joints "sound off".

Escaping gases:
Scientists explain that synovial fluid present in your joints acts as a lubricant. The fluid contains the gases oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide. When you pop or crack a joint, you stretch the joint capsule. Gas is rapidly released, which forms bubbles. In order to crack the same knuckle again, you have to wait until the gases return to the synovial fluid.

Movement of joints, tendons and ligaments:
When a joint moves, the tendon’s position changes and moves slightly out of place. You may hear a snapping sound as the tendon returns to its original position. In addition, your ligaments may tighten as you move your joints. This commonly occurs in your knee or ankle, and can make a cracking sound.

•Rough surfaces:
Arthritic joints make sounds caused by the loss of smooth cartilage and the roughness of the joint surface.
Is joint cracking harmful? If you are feeling pain when your joints pop, than you should seek a health care professional. In terms of knuckle cracking, some studies show that knuckle cracking does not cause serious harm. Other studies show that repetitive knuckle cracking can do some damage to the soft tissue of the joint. It may also lead to a weak grip and a swelling hand.

Pearls Crush of the Month: Paula Patton

Raised in Los Angeles, Paula Patton has been pursuing her dreams of becoming an actress ever since she was a little girl. Having grown up in the entertainment capital of the world, Paula began preparing for a career in the business while still in high school. Paula’s teen years were spent at the prestigious Hamilton School for the Performing Arts, where the would-be performer spent hours honing her craft. After graduating, Paula received the opportunity of a lifetime when PBS selected her as one of four young filmmakers to participate in a program called The Ride, in which she was given access to equipment and a small crew, and told to film her experiences with other youths across America.

Following that experience, Paula enrolled at UC Berkeley, though she transferred to USC Film School after her first year, and went on to graduate magna cum laude. It wasn’t long before Paula, with her experience on The Ride and her education behind her, managed to land a job with the Discovery Channel as producer for the show Medical Diaries.

Paula eventually grew tired of toiling behind the camera and decided to sign herself up for acting classes. She consequently began the arduous auditioning process, finally landing her first role opposite Will Smith and Eva Mendes in 2005’s Hitch. She followed that up with a small part in the little-seen drama London (also released in ’05 and featuring Chris Evans, Jessica Biel and Jason Statham), and appeared alongside OutKast boys Andre Benjamin and Big Boi in Idlewild (2006).

Paula was also cast in the 2006 film Déjà Vu, a thriller starring Denzel Washington and Val Kilmer and recently starred in "Just Wright" alongside Common and Queen Latifah.
